In today’s passage, David is anointed by the people as the king over all of the tribes of Israel, and he conquers Zion, establishing it as the City of David, Jerusalem. We highlight this momentous moment in Israel’s history, but we find that it is subverted by the text of 1 and 2 Samuel. We compare David’s anointing as king and his entrance into Jerusalem with Jesus’ anointing and entrance.
